The Visitors’ Perception of Msheireb Museum’s Texts on Qatar Position of Slavery

Abstract

This paper focuses on a broader meaning of translation because in museums all mediation is translations. This research aims to ascertain whether museums are achieving their aims of “intensification cultural exchange with the Arab peoples in particular and with other nations in general” (Ministry of Transport and Communications 2008, 13) to accomplish Qatar National Vision 2030. The research investigates the visitors perceiving of Msheireb Museum’s message of slavery, by analyzing the texts mentioned by the visitors to measure the visitor understanding of the message. The research used ‘mechanisms of narrative’ specially, temporality, causal emplotment, selective appropriation to analyses the visitors’ interviews. The paper argues that investigate the way visitors perceive museums message, leads to better understanding of what should be changed, in a way to serves the message of the museums. The research found that there is a problem faced some of the visitors in understanding the museum's message of slavery, due to the museum's presentation of the texts. If the museum wants to development if it is content, such research could be applied to find what must be developed. It is therefore envisioned that the methods of this research could be applied to other museums to help museums achieve their intended goals.
