Student thesis: Master's Dissertation

Abstract

This thesis explores the applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in project management (PM) within the context of Qatar, where AI adoption remains underdeveloped. The study addresses two key research questions: (1) identifying project management tasks that AI can enhance, and (2) evaluating the extent to which AI can replace human roles. The research develops the AI-Driven Project Management Framework (APMF), a theoretical framework to guide AI integration in PM. The findings reveal that AI tools significantly improve scheduling, resource allocation, risk management, and communication, while reducing human error and enhancing productivity. However, AI is found to complement, rather than replace, project managers by automating repetitive tasks and enabling higher-level decision-making and problem-solving. Successful AI adoption requires a strategic, phased approach, organizational readiness assessment, and a focus on AI literacy and training. Limitations of the study include its reliance on a theoretical framework and its specificity to Qatar's context, which may not generalize to other regions. Future research directions include empirical testing of the APMF, exploring AI’s impact on project manager roles, addressing AI ethics, and investigating sector-specific and industry-specific AI applications. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on AI in project management by offering a structured approach to integration while emphasizing the importance of human oversight in decision-making and ethical considerations.
