The Transformation of Public Open Spaces in the city of Doha

Abstract

The urban development in Doha, Qatar over time has led to the drastic transformation i of the city, and the emergence of ambiguous public space and in a crisis of built urban identity. This research aim is to analyze the historical form of the baraha to identify the factors that contributed to its social attributes. The study will also discuss a recent urban regeneration project, Msheireb along with the Barahat Msheireb, a modern interpretation of a vernacular public space. The initial investigation of this research will reveal that modern forms of public spaces, such as public parks and neighborhood parks are not responding to social demands, and they lack public engagement, resulting in other fundamental issues to reflect local urban identity. This research aims to generate a better understanding about the significance of the baraha and other forms of public space in Doha highlighting the key values that generate social cohesion thereby enriching the public use. In addition, the research aims to address the qualities of a successful public space that maintain the public health and wellbeing and the ability to become a reference for the tradition and built heritage.
