The Strategy of Qatar Central Bank in Protecting the Sustainability of Economy During the Blockade

Abstract

This thesis analyzes the sustainability of Qatari economy by looking into the policies of Qatar Central Bank and identifies the strategies of Qatar Central Bank in maintaining the stability of the financial sector especially after the blockade. The thesis has been structured in a way to cover all of the blockade aspects, by first introducing the main events that happened in Qatar on 5th of June 2017 and list all of the major happenings on a local and international level. This research has identified the main role of QCB in Qatar by explaining the different roles assigned to this bank and the importance he plays in the economic infrastructure. The Qatar Central Bank has influenced different sectors and supported the financial system in Doha since its establishment. To clearly understand the role taken after the blockade, it is essential to highlight the framework created by this entity and its relation with other financial entities. It also interconnects with the major economy sectors in Qatar and aligns with the Qatar National Vision 2030. This thesis elaborates on the relationship of QCB with the different economy sectors including the oil and gas, trading sector, manufacturing sector… Then the main problem has been defined on how the blockade affected the economy and explains the disturbance resulted from this blockade on the banking sector._x000D_ A main element of the blockade consequences, is the QAR exchange rate towards the USD; QCB played a major role in the stability of the currency over the past decades as well as during the blockade until now._x000D_ The blockade was overcome with policies and strategies imposed by QCB which have been identified and analyzed with the official speeches given by the governor of QCB and the directives towards sustaining the economy in Qatar. The research was supported by a field survey conducted on QCB’s staff to understand the changes and actions that were happening on an operational level._x000D_ This thesis has ended up by few recommendations based on the findings of this research that could further enhance the economic sector and improve the self efficiency of the financial system.
