THE ROLE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION IN THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT

Abstract

The paper is divided into two parts, the first is about the role of the European Union in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and what types of contributions it had to the conflict as a third party. Whereas the second part focuses on where the European Union falls as a power in terms of being normative, civilian, military, or a small power looking at different examples and events. The arguments in this paper are more or less focused on the notion whether the European Union is a ‘payer’ or a ‘player’ in the conflict, how is that, and why has it done that. The security of the Middle East is of high importance to the European Union for several reasons such as, being a peace broker, gain an international recognition and domestic pressure from the European populace to act. Ever since the European Union was a Council consisting of Six Member States, they sought to be a global power with significance, despite the fact there has been changes in stances, strategies, and mechanisms between the Member States, the European Union managed to have an incentive role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Albeit all the challenges that the European Union struggled from they always supported their peaceful two-state solution.
