Political crowdfunding offers promising potential as a viable source of funding, and it has been gaining popularity in practice in politics, yet existing literature on the topic remains scarce. This study aims to apply a social science theory, Civic Voluntarism Model (CVM), to explore the drivers influencing political crowdfunding participation in Indonesia. Its quantitative research methodology involves using a web-based survey as a data collection method. The study analyzed the collected data by utilizing the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach on SmartPLS 3 statistical software. The research collected responses from 122 Indonesian participants to evaluate how CVM-based factors influence people’s behavioral intentions to adopt political crowdfunding and the most significant factors that support it. The research found that five out of eight CVM-based factors positively affect the intentions, while the other three are irrelevant. The findings suggest that it is essential that fundraisers strategize their campaigns to attract people affiliated with political parties and equipped with financial, time, and technological resources as they are the most likely to donate to their political crowdfunding campaigns. In addition, people who believe that they understand Indonesian politics and can influence it may also be interested in participating in political crowdfunding. These results also show that it does not take political interest and awareness for people to have the intention to adopt political crowdfunding – increasing the chance for people outside the spectrum of politics to participate in this democratizing digital platform. Research contributions, limitations, and avenues for future studies are also discussed in the study.
