Souq al-Quwatli, Rebuilding the identity of the old souq of al-Raqqa

Abstract

This research project aims to investigate Souq al-Quwatli in the city of al-Raqqa, Syria, a crucial marketplace that has played a vital role in the city's cultural and economic history. While rebuilding urban spaces is essential after any conflict, there's a lack of information on how to reconstruct cities like al-Raqqa. To fill this gap, our study uses historical research and case study methods to develop a plan for Souq al-Quwatli. Drawing upon historical records, archival documents, and urban planning principles, this thesis identifies the significance of Souq al-Quwatli as a central hub for commerce, social interaction, and cultural exchange. Through case studies of successful urban reconstruction projects in similar contexts, we distill key insights and lessons applicable to the restoration of Souq al-Quwatli. The study concludes with the development of a design concept and policy framework to guide the reconstruction activities. Our approach draws on historical authenticity, community involvement, and sustainable development principles and provides a model for reviving Souq al-Quwatli as an inclusive urban environment. By combining architectural legacy with modern practicality, our design aims to restore the marketplace's physical fabric, stimulate socioeconomic recovery, and build communal identity among al-Raqqa citizens. Finally, this thesis contributes to the discussion of post-conflict urban rebuilding by providing a comprehensive knowledge of the obstacles and opportunities involved in resurrecting historical sites such as Souq al-Quwatli. This study's scientific rigor and practical suggestions aim to teach policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders participating in restoration initiatives, eventually paving the way for al-Raqqa's resilient and culturally rich future.
