As a reaction to the rampant loss of Aden's architectural identity due to socio-political instability and recent urban growth, this thesis offers the idea of conceptualizing a Community Cultural Center to regain the city's unique architectural identity. Formerly a significant port city in southern Yemen, Aden has undergone cultural and architectural decline, further leading to the decline of traditional craftsmanship and traditional building practices. This research aims to bridge the gap between historic preservation and contemporary design by integrating the application of traditional architectural elements into practical community areas.
The study employs the mixed-methods approach, conjoining history examination and a culturally inspired project case study evaluation of projects such as Abdelhalim Ibrahim's Cultural Park for Children and Anna Heringer's Anandaloy Center.
Case studies serve to provide a reference against which to learn how architecture fosters community and cultural voice with localized environmental and societal needs considerations.
The design proposal emphasizes the use of local materials, such as Shamsani basalt and pumice stone, and traditional construction techniques that reflect Aden's historical heritage. The spatial organization includes courtyards, galleries, classrooms, and workshops as educational and cultural hubs for the local community. The project also addresses climate-responsive design strategies, such as natural ventilation and shading, to enhance comfort and sustainability.
Lastly, this thesis advocates for preserving and restoring Aden's architectural heritage within a contemporary yet contextually driven design. In the design of a space that not only pays tribute to the city's storied past but also empowers its people, this project wishes to serve as an example of cultural and architectural restoration in post-conflict urban settings.
