Abstract

While the subjects of marriage and divorce in Qatar have been extensively studied in academic literature, little attention has been given to exploring the views and lived experiences of Qataris with post-consummation divorce experience (QWDE) in relation to remarriage. As existing data indicate variations in the decision-making process and context surrounding remarriage after divorce, this study, grounded in a social constructivist approach, adopted an epistemological perspective to understand the remarriage views and lived experiences of QWDE. Through the qualitative semi-structured interviews with 15 Qatari men and women, various dimensions, inspired by the literature review, have been examined to explore the remarriage scene such as societal and individual perceptions of remarriage, personal challenges, motives, fears of remarrying, and shifts in preferences compared to previous marriage. For parents, additional dimensions addressed the impact of parenthood as well as child-stepparent dynamics. Findings have revealed the complex interplay of social, personal, and legal factors in influencing remarriage views and experiences within QWDE. While some participants viewed remarriage from instinctual, religious and familial perspectives, others cited stigma, emotional concerns, and legal-related challenges as barriers. This duality highlighted the necessity of tailored social policies and support mechanisms that can empower divorced individuals to pursue remarriage and further support the state’s efforts to preserve and strengthen marriage and family institutions.
