ABSTRACT
This thesis delves into the endeavors of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in Mogadishu, Somalia, focusing on ameliorating the conditions of the city's impoverished residents. It scrutinizes the obstacles they face, the opportunities they seize, and the impacts they generate, offering a multifaceted perspective on their contribution to the economic and social advancement of the region. The specific objectives encompass evaluating the efficacy of NGO interventions in addressing the distinctive challenges of poverty reduction in Mogadishu, identifying key hurdles hindering their efforts, and exploring strategies for local NGOs to leverage synergies to bolster their influence within the urban landscape. Through this comprehensive examination, the study aims to provide valuable insights into the dynamics of NGO engagement in Mogadishu's development trajectory. Examining Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and poverty reduction efforts in Mogadishu reveals a landscape marked by challenges and opportunities. Despite facing persistent obstacles such as political instability, limited resources, and security risks, local NGOs have demonstrated commendable efforts in addressing immediate needs and building resilience within vulnerable communities. Initiatives like the Baxnaano social safety net program and exploration of the blue economy present promising avenues for sustainable development and economic diversification. However, challenges such as politicization of aid, capacity limitations, and security threats underscore the complexity of poverty alleviation efforts in conflict-affected regions. Collaborative approaches, innovative strategies, and a focus on sustainability are critical pillars for overcoming these challenges and achieving meaningful progress. By leveraging technology, fostering partnerships, and optimizing resources, NGOs in Mogadishu can enhance their impact and contribute to long-term poverty reduction and inclusive development. Moreover, addressing capacity gaps, fostering stakeholder trust, and navigating bureaucratic hurdles are essential for effective collaboration and sustainable poverty reduction outcomes
