Instrumentalizing Transediting: Arabic News Transediting of Shireen Abu Akleh's Killing

Abstract

This thesis delves into the utilization of transediting techniques used in the Arabic transediting of English investigative news articles that report on the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, as generated by American news media outlets. Focusing on the Arabic transedited pieces produced by Al Jazeera Arabic and The New Arab on the one side, and the Arabic version of Times of Israel on the other side, the study employs a combined approach of Narrative Theory and Appraisal Framework to analyze the ideological interventions in the process of news translation. The findings reveal how personal narratives are interwoven with professional journalistic narratives despite the veneer of neutrality. The study highlights the instrumentalization of news translation to amplify the Israeli-state propaganda. At the same time, the study shows the alternative transediting that seeks to resist these dominant narratives. While the transediting mechanisms are similar, their application can lead to vastly different outcomes.
