Student thesis: Master's Dissertation

Abstract

This thesis seeks to assess the translation of idiomatic expressions in Sharif al-Jayyar’s Arabic translation of The Secret Garden by applying Juliane House’s (2015) newly revised Translation Quality Assessment model (TQA). The study analyzes the Source Text (ST) and Target Text (TT) in terms of three Register parameters, namely Field, Tenor, and Mode as well as Genre. After that, a comparison is made to highlight mismatches and classify them into two types of translation, namely covert and overt. The study aims at testing the applicability of House’s TQA model regarding evaluating the translation of idiomatic expressions in a long text such as a novel. It also provides a statement of quality on the TT. The results of this research indicate that House’s model has been proven practical in assessing the translation of idiomatic expressions from English into Arabic. It has also been concluded that the Arabic translation under study has fallen short of fulfilling the intended functions of the ST.
