Student thesis: Master's Dissertation

Abstract

The effects of Islamophobia disseminating through broad based media and social platforms has allowed for misinformation to spread and anti-Muslim sentiment to expand rapidly, causing a crisis of faith within the Muslim community. With the political lens focused in the last presidential campaign on creating a fervor around Islam, the topic of Islamophobia has garnered global attention. The American Muslim community has had to adapt to counter the growing Islamophobia rhetoric. By using discourse that paints Islam backwards, Islamophobia has left more and more Muslims doubting their Islamic ideals. In a response to Islamophobia, many active organizations have grown to combat this rhetoric through intellectual, scholarly and social activist means. One organization in particular, the Yaqeen Institute, is gaining traction at countering the Islamophobia discourse and keen on re-conquering the narrative around Islam for Muslims. By differentiating themselves and actively working on fields of study, like mental health, they are carving their place in the landscape of American Muslim organizations.
