ABSTRACT
This thesis examines the role of social media in shaping social cohesion within the context of Israel's occupation of Palestine, highlighting how digital platforms influence community dynamics and public discourse. By employing a mixed-methods approach, this research analyzes content from various social media platforms to understand how narratives foster cohesion or incite division. The study reveals that while social media offers a powerful platform for marginalized voices and facilitates broad-based activism, it also serves as a battleground for misinformation and ideological polarization. Hashtags like "#FreePalestine" unite activists but also amplify division, exemplifying social media's dual role in both bridging gaps and deepening existing divides. A significant finding from this research is that conflict-related content receives significantly higher engagement compared to peace-oriented initiatives, with divisive content consistently attracting more attention. The findings underscore the complexities of digital interactions, where they can either bridge gaps between communities or deepen existing divides. This research contributes to our understanding of digital communication's impact on social cohesion, particularly in geopolitically sensitive areas, and offers insights into developing strategies that enhance constructive discourse in digital spaces.
