Abstract

As the world is becoming more and more digitalized, politics is following suit, where traditional communication is transforming with social media. The presidency of Donald Trump has been eye-catching, especially his Twitter diplomacy, which has provided the media plenty of stories to write about. Similarly, the data provided by the Trump administration on Twitter has been a gold mine for linguistic analysts. This thesis project focuses on the linguistic style of Donald Trump and a few affiliates during the Coronavirus pandemic, Black Lives Matter movement and Muslim Ban, where a plethora of tweets regarding each event were collected to discover themes of their messages. It was discovered the messages contained fearmongering, character assassination and high praise after conducting an analysis with AntConc on the Coronavirus corpus, sentiment analysis on the Black Lives Matter corpus and stance analysis on the Muslim ban corpus. Furthermore, the research concluded that the linguistic style of the Trump presidency on Twitter revolved around such themes because it prioritized America, was brutally honest, and wanted to win the 2020 American elections by diminishing Joe Biden’s reputation and praising Donald Trump and his team’s efforts.
