N2 - A number of pioneer studies published in the twentieth century, especially from the second half onwards, approached Islamic ethics as a subject of academic and critical inquiry. These studies were developed by prominent names in the field of Islamic Studies such as Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh Drāz (d. 1958), George Hourani (d. 1984), Fazlur Rahman (d. 1988), Daud Rahbar (d. 2013) and Majid Fakhry (Drāz 1951; Rahbar 1960; Rahman 1983, 103–121; Rahman 1984, 170–185; Hourani 1985; Fakhry 1991; Draz 1998; Draz 2008).
