The Financial Cost of Childhood Disability in Qatar

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Managing childhood disability is a complex endeavor, requiring a support system that encompasses healthcare, education, and social integration—each of which comes at a cost. This study explores the financial dynamics of fifteen diverse families who are raising children with disabilities (CWDs) in Qatar. A major finding is that financial strain creates a spillover effect, lowering the life expectations of their CWD as education or medical services are either significantly reduced, stopped, or not suitable to their needs. From the medical side, a rigid system and overstretched governmental services have led to long waiting lists for diagnosis and therapies at a time when early and regular intervention is critical. Moreover, scant affordable and high-quality education options for CWDs result in an extraordinary number of children out of school. The chapter concludes with recommendations.
