Abstract

This chapter outlines the main syntactic features that distinguish legal texts from other text types. The main syntactic features that are discussed in this chapter are ‘sentence length and complexity’, ‘complex prepositional phrases’, ‘nominalization’, ‘non-finite clauses’, ‘whiz deletion’, ‘passive constructions’, ‘conditionals’, and ‘unique determiners’. In discussing these features, the chapter is divided into two main sections, namely ‘Syntactic features of English legal discourse’ and ‘Syntactic features of Arabic legal discourse’. In the second section, other features, such as the use of accusative of purpose and absolute object, are discussed. The chapter closes with the list of the references used therein followed by several exercises and assignments.
