Abstract

This rich edited volume on Sufism, with contributions from 12 young scholars, is expansive both temporally and geographically. It covers the relatively understudied years from 1200 to 1800, spanning the tail end of Islam's classical age into early modernity; and extends beyond the Middle Eastern and North African lands to also include Persian, Turkic, and South Asian Sufis. The range of locales and languages is addressed with considerable intellectual rigour, and does justice to Sufism's complex legacy in Islamic history and thought. The 12 chapters are equally divided into the volume's four broadly defined sections: “Historiography,” “Landscapes,” “Doctrine and Praxis,” and “Negotiations.”
