Abstract

Zionism, the founding ideology of the State of Israel, declared in Palestine in 1948, has faced strong opposition not only from non-Jews but also from many Jews since its emergence in the late 1890s. Initially emerging as a minority ideology, Zionism, following increasing antisemitic incidents and the de facto establishment of Israel, has gradually been embraced by the majority of Jews. Today, Zionism remains an ideology embraced by the vast majority of Jews. However, the number of Jews who question this ideology and the state it created is also increasing every day. This study explains, from a historical perspective and in both religious and secular dimensions, the opposition to Zionism among some Jews, a topic of considerable importance for the future of Israel in particular and the Israeli/Palestinian issue in general.
