Abstract

Education has been recognised as an effective agent of
change. It not only broadens the mental horizon of the people, but
also motivates and help them to participate actively in the social and
economic development of the family and the country at large.

Labour time is the main asset of the poor. Most of the
literature shows that education increases the productivity of this
asset. Increasing the productivity of labour is the most effective way
to combat poverty.

The main objective of the paper is to explore the role of
education in determining the poverty status of a household. An

The paper is divided into four sections. Section I presents some of
the literature related to the role of education in combating poverty.
Section II is devoted to the methodology and data set used in this
paper. Section III discusses the educational profile of the poor, while
