Abstract

The photonic band structure of an anisotropic infinite square array of parallel quartz rods embedded in an epoxy matrix was computed. An extended plane-wave-expansion method that can describe general anisotropic materials was used. As such, the existence of band gaps for nonzero values of kz, resulting from the closing of the former gap, and from the opening of other gaps when kz increases were demonstrated.
