Abstract

There is growing interest among scholars in the impact of national cultures and institutions oncorporate social responsibility (CSR). Evidence suggests that national culture dimensions have astrong impact on organisations’ CSR behaviour (Rigov and Zolo, 2007), and managers’ use of CSRvalues in decision making (Waldman et al., 2006). Organisations are being encouraged or dis-couraged by their national cultures and institutions to engage in CSR activities to meet powerfulactors’ and interest groups’ expectations about the social responsibilities of businesses. To date, however, research on the impact of national cultures and institution has focused exclusively onorganisations operating in Western countries; there is insufficient knowledge abouthow nationalcultures and institutions shape CSR activities in non-western countries. The purpose of this specialissue of the International Journal of Cross-Cultural Management is to contribute towards closingthis gap in our knowledge by examining how national cultures and institutions shape and defineCSR strategies in the Middle East
