Abstract

The rapid ascent of esports has transformed it from a niche pastime into a global phenomenon, generating significant revenue and cultural influence. This chapter explores the burgeoning esports landscape in the Middle East, focusing on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Both nations are leveraging esports to advance economic diversification, bolster soft power, and engage their young populations, aligning with their broader national development goals. Utilizing a geopolitical economy framework, this study analyzes the strategic motivations and approaches of the UAE and KSA in integrating esports into their national visions. It highlights the potential of esports to shape the region's economic and cultural future, offering insights into its role as a dynamic tool for regional transformation.
