Abstract

The original idea for this thematic issue was born during the international conference ‘Islamic Law and Bioethics: Theory and Practice’ that I convened at Leiden University, the Netherlands, during the period 7–8 December 2011.1 Besides the papers read during the conference, a call for papers was published online to solicit more contributions. Three out of the six articles included in this issue were read during the conference, two resulted from the call for papers and the sixth was selected from the ‘Early View’ section of Bioethics because of its relevance to the overall theme of this thematic issue.
