Abstract

Optical disks are becoming popular among library and information professionals because of their enormous storage and rapid retrieval capacities and the possibilities they offer of avoiding heavy telecommunications and on-line connection charges for the frequent use of bibliographic data bases, factual data banks and other information sources. Although various types of optical disk are available, the most widely-used is the Compact Disk Read Only Memory (CD-ROM). which has a storage capacity of 550 megabytes
- equivalent to 1,500 floppy disks or more than a quarter of a million A4 pages of text.
