Historical aspects of energy

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This book chapter dwells more profoundly into the origins of energy use, its forms and genesis, and its status in today's global energy outlook. This ranges from pre-industrial uses of fire and animal power as means of energetic forms. Energy's role and impact in human history have also been discussed and analyzed. The chapter then dwells on pre-industrial energy systems, primarily the invention of water and windmills, and their spread and variety in design based on locality. The industrial revolution remains a focal and pivotal point when exploring the historical aspect of energy. The role of the steam engine and the early electricity generation, as well as the first electrical grids and power stations, are explored in depth. The development and discovery of fossil fuels and, subsequently, the adoption of nuclear and renewable energies are further analyzed. This chapter provides readers with a rhythmic and continuous timeline from the onset of energy utilization in human history to the latest global trends and challenges the energy sector faces. The chapter also dwells on the advantages of renewables and the proposed solutions to combat the global warming threat, which is one of the world's primary concerns for humanity in the 21st century. This chapter can be insightful and valuable for both novice and experienced researchers in this field, providing them with a comprehensive toolkit to analyze the history of energy to shape an accurate and compelling picture of the current state, which will be used to advance the future of clean and reliable energy for humanity.
