Global and Local Strategies

In the second chapter, strategies whether global referring to the general strategy that the translators adopt before embarking on the actual act of translation or local strategies, which are the strategies that the translator may well resort to when facing any problem. Global strategies in this chapter are discussed by touching on the importance of giving what is called ‘translation brief’ full consideration prior to embarking on the actual act of translation. Then, local strategies are discussed by classifying them into 12 types, namely ‘literal translation’, ‘borrowing’, ‘substitution’, ‘expansion’, ‘reduction’, ‘shift’, ‘syntactic restructuring’, ‘structural calquing’, ‘between-line translation’, ‘naturalizing’, ‘idiomatic translation’ and ‘ideational translation’. This is followed by many illustrative examples to show the reader the link between the global strategy adopted by the translator before translation and local strategies adopted while translating. The chapter closes with the list of the references used therein followed by several questions and assignments.
