Error rates and outage analysis of diversity MBPSK on shadowed frequency-selective fading channels

Abstract

The use of postdetection microdiversity combining to mitigate the effects of slow frequency-selective Rayleigh fading and macrodiversity to alleviate the effects of shadowing are investigated. Closed form results for system performance using four performance criteria are obtained. The first two performance criteria considered are the short term BER and the irreducible BER. The second two are the complementary distribution over the lognormal shadowing of the average BER (that is, the probability that the average short term BER exceeds a threshold value) and the probability that the instantaneous BER exceeds a threshold value, averaged over a spatial environment. The former is a measure of the mobile outage probability while the latter is a measure of the quasi-static outage probability.
