Effect of substrate hardness on wear performance of alternative die materials for stamping of advanced high strength steels

Abstract

Newer die materials, coatings and surface enhancement techniques are needed to circumvent the excessive friction and wear conditions emerging with the use of alternative lightweight sheet material grades in automotive, aerospace and appliance industries. AISI D2 (DIN 1.2379) is a commonly used die material in cold forming industry thus far; however, because of its low galling resistance with newer stamping materials such as Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS), it is being replaced by several other die materials such as DC53. This study aimed to investigate the effect of substrate hardness on die wear resistance of DC 53 against AHSS grade DP 600 sheet blanks by utilizing a recently developed die wear test method. Die samples with different initial hardness values were coated with the thermal diffusion (TD) technique. The assessment of wear was based on mass loss, surface roughness measurements, and specific wear rate calculations. Results of DC53 die samples are compared with some other die materials also.
