Abstract

Polymers and polymer nanocomposites, despite their extensive use, are susceptible to aging and degradation over the time. This chapter explores the chemical aging and degradation of polymers and nanocomposites and factors including environmental, physical, and chemical processes. Furthermore, the chapter exposes the effect of harsh chemicals (acidic and alkaline), high temperatures, sunlight, and even water on the degradation of these materials. Different analysis techniques for chemical aging including spectroscopic technique, thermal analysis, mechanical properties, and macroscopic techniques are studied to analyze chemical aged polymers and polymer nanocomposites. An understanding of these mechanisms and their impact is crucial for designing durable polymers and nanocomposites that maintain their functionality across a wide range of applications.
