Abstract

Personalized medicine is a healthcare approach that tailors treatment to individual patients based on their unique characteristics at the molecular, physiological, environmental exposure and behavioral levels. The development of enabling technologies furthers the goals of personalized medicine in driving the transformation of individualized patient treatment and making healthcare more precise and effective. Rapid advances in omics technologies, wearable technologies and progress in big data analytics have greatly facilitated large-scale integrated studies and the advent of personalized healthcare initiatives. Big data plays a significant role in personalized medicine, providing the foundation for data-driven analytics guiding healthcare decision-making, treatments, and interventions tailored to individual patient. Artificial intelligence is poised to accelerate personalized medicine by leveraging the analytical and predictive capabilities of machine and deep learning to process and interpret big data, and derive actionable insights. However, the responsible implementation of personalized medicine faces several challenges, including data integration, privacy, security, data quality, and high computational requirements. These issues can be addressed through the implementation of robust privacy and security measures, enhancement of data quality and mitigation of biases in data interpretation. The transition from conventional to precision medicine requires flexible solutions and interdisciplinary collaborations to realize the full potential of personalized healthcare. The future of personalized medicine depends on leveraging the power of big data and artificial intelligence to customize healthcare delivery and maximize its effectiveness to each individual patient.
