Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics-Centered Design

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The chapter presents the changing relationship that exists between technology and mankind since the days of industrialization, characterized by enhanced mechanical labor, through to the era of development of the artificial intelligence (AI). In this way, the historical trajectory shows a reciprocal adaptation and coexistence. First, the utilitarian philosophy guided by technological progress was seen as instrumental to the satisfaction of man’s requirements. Equilibrium has transformed into interdependency. It is a relationship of symbiosis. This evolution of the relationship outlines a significant change in paradigms, setting grounds for integrated living. Even then, the history of ethics is dominated by utilitarianism, and the modern age of AI, biotechnology, and the Internet of Things (IoT) represent a motley mix of things reflecting serious ethical gaps. The latter points out the necessity of a general framework that conforms to the human rights, social norms, and legal bounds. This chapter is an advocacy for the convergence of the ethical, conceptual, and technical considerations in the design and implementation of the technology. An age in which most of life’s aspects, from employment to national security, will take their course at the behest of AI. Herein, bias and unequal effects on demographic groups may also socially engage AI, which is hence highlighted with concern. That understanding thus calls for themes that are interdisciplinary and that bring views of social sciences, technology, ethics, digital governance, and policy together. Responding to these very challenges, the present chapter brings about the idea of ‘artificial ethics-centered design framework’. This framework further allows the introduction of the ethical and social aspects into the technological design, and most particularly in the case of AI applications. Among the expressed values, there is openness and stakeholders’ engagement, but also ongoing assessments, in order to be in a position to address and ameliorate the effects of technology on society effectively. It seeks to solve problems that have accompanied technological superiority, responsible and equal technological future.
