Abstract

As a carbon-free fuel, ammonia can become a significant energy carrier for utilization in various sectors, ranging from energy storage to thermodynamic cycles. Although, the current production of ammonia is particularly natural gas dependent, novel ammonia synthesis methods, such as electrochemical ammonia production are under investigation. In this contribution, a comprehensive discussion on the production of chemical substance ammonia (NH3) is presented. In addition, several case studies are included to investigate and compare the cost and environmental impact aspects of ammonia production. Furthermore, a case study for experimental investigation of electrochemical synthesis of ammonia is included.
