Abstract

We provide a brief overview of the emerging area of prescriptive learning which combines supervised learning with optimization. Prescriptive Learning is most active in operations research but is now finding applications in diverse areas ranging from database optimization to chip design. Reinforcement Learning (RL) is the most developed form of PL for sequential and stochastic optimization problems. We will give an example of how RL can be applied to a traditional and well-studied join ordering problem for query optimization.
