Abstract
This study aims to develop the Turjuman Lexicon, a comprehensive bilingual glossary (English_x0002_Arabic) of key terminology in Translation Studies. Translation Studies is a remarkably
interdisciplinary field, and its terminology stems from various disciplines such as linguistics, literary
studies, cultural studies, Technology, and AI etc. This diversity leads to confusion, particularly for
Arabic-speaking students and scholars grappling with inconsistent terminology and regional
variations across these disciplines. The Turjuman Lexicon will address this issue by systematically
compiling approximately 2,000 essential terms, offering clear, concise definitions in English and
Arabic. The lexicon will feature extensive cross-referencing, brief explanations of the significance
of the terms, and examples to aid comprehension.
This project builds on previous research by the researcher and initiatives to standardize
translation terminology within the Arab world, such as the Kalima Project and the King Abdullah
Prize for Translation. However, existing resources remain limited in scope. The Turjuman Lexicon
will fill this gap, providing a more extensive, specialized resource tailored to the needs of
translation students, scholars, and practitioners. The final product will be in digital format, ensuring
broad accessibility and long-term impact.
Expected outcomes include improved comprehension and usage of translation terminology in
academic and professional contexts, particularly among Arabic-speaking communities. By making
these terms accessible in both languages, the project seeks to enhance the quality of translation
research and education in the region.
