The digitalisation of the language industry: Implications and comparative insights

Project: Applied Research

Project Details

Abstract

Using ethnographic methods, this study explores the digitalisation of the language interpreting industry, focusing on the impact of remote- and platform-based solutions, artificial intelligence, and natural language processing. It examines the social, ethical, and organisational implications of these technologies on professional practices, linguistic access, and service delivery. It does so by comparing three major interpreting hubs in Europe (Belgium, United Kingdom, and Italy) with Qatar, each spearheading in the sector thanks to their industry primacy and national efforts towards digitalisation. This project contributes to both scholarly and industry knowledge by offering novel, critical insights for sustainable digital development and language accessibility in the communication economy.
