The Aesthetics of Monotheism: Islam and the Hermeneutics of Art and Architecture

Project: Basic Research

Project Details

Abstract

The authors of "The Aesthetics of Monotheism" propose a comprehensive study of Islamic aesthetic foundations through a hermeneutical analysis with three main objectives. First, they aim to develop a theoretical framework based on Islamic aesthetic concepts to establish evaluation criteria for artworks. Second, they seek to create a solid foundation for analyzing Islamic architectural works, addressing the limitations of previous studies conducted by researchers who may lack deep understanding of Islamic culture. Third, they plan to expand beyond the current narrow focus on art and architecture to include various art forms like music, poetry, and illumination. The book aims to fill a gap in English-language scholarship by providing a comprehensive perspective on Islamic aesthetics written by Muslim scholars familiar with Islamic beliefs.
