Abstract
Hermeneutics of the Cave joins a body of extant literature on the interpretation of the human condition but with a notable scholarly difference. The key intent in this volume is to take the reader beyond
the range of Socratic arguments about the human condition and Plato’s cave allegory centering on being in the life world, if per impossible being in the life world was one of Plato’s arguments it would warrant serious interpretation of the allegory. The goal is to situate such knowledge, in a
conversation about the qur’anic exegesis of the Hira Cave, and the First Verses of Revelation; the Exegesis of the Sun; the Exegesis of the Light; the Rewards of doing Good and the Undivided line (sirat al-Mustaqim). The same proliferation of an expository Qur’anic exegetical discourse occurs with abundance in two notable works: S. R. Burge, The Meaning of the Word: Lexicology and Qur’anic Exegesis and Hussein Abdul-Raof’s Schools of Qur’anic Exegesis, both are lucid studies of the historical and linguistic framework of the genesis and development of the exegetical methodology.
