Ādamiyyat al-Insān (Human Dignity): An Islamic Framework across Theology, History, Law, and Contemporary Reality

This project studies Ādamiyyat al-Insān (Adamic humanity) as a foundational Islamic framework for human worth, moral status, and legal protection. It argues that, alongside modern secular and liberal human-rights paradigms, the Islamic intellectual tradition offers a distinct and internally coherent account of dignity rooted in divine creation, moral responsibility (taklīf), legal capacity (ahliyya), inviolability (ḥurma), and divine honor (takrīm). Using a normatively grounded Islamic approach, the research traces the theological foundations, historical development, and legal articulation of Ādamiyyat al-Insān in classical scholarship. It then engages contemporary contexts where dignity is undermined by conflict, displacement, marginalization, legal exclusion, and structural injustice. Through integrated theological, historical, legal, and contextual analysis, the project shows how Islamic tradition can contribute substantively to current ethical, legal, and policy debates. Outputs include scholarly publications, an international academic symposium, and a peer-reviewed edited volume to be published by HBKU Press, supporting CIS’s mission of globally relevant Islamic scholarship.
